To provide an imaginative and original alternative to the high street, so that customers can find individual designs that have been made to a high standard and haven't been massed produced.
I want to bring freedom to fashion. I don’t want fashion to dictate, I want fashion to celebrate.
Wear what you want, not what "they" tell you to wear, but most importantly enjoy wearing it.
Style —I love the nostalgic past, and embrace the mystery of the future, so I combine the two with my imagination to create a contemporary style with nod to those of yesterday.
Recycle — My answer to fast fashion. Our excessive culture produces waste. A waste which I can use for innovative fuel. Consumer cast-offs and unwanted belongings can be used to create unique results. So I often use a mixture of salvaged vintage fabrics, jewellery and scarves with recycled objects and new materials. In the past I have been known to up-cycle products from unwanted rubbish such as mini bars from dolls houses, cake stands from vinyl records and fascinators from rulers.
by Jayne Elwell, Designer, maker and founder of The Libertarian
When I graduated from my Fine Art Degree, I'd become bored with the mass produced, anti-ethical, bad quality products that the high street was producing. Things had become more accessible and affordable but essentially they were reproductions and watered down versions of top designers work. Everybody seemed to be producing the same designs. I didn't like this cycle of repetition and the fashion industries focus on money over creativity, so in protest I started The Libertarian.
Initially under the name of The Libertarian I created a mix of quirkily original clothing, accessories and home-wear. However after two years I decided to focus on one area that had become important to me: hats and head wear.
Hats have become over looked in recent years. I see millinery as a dying art form and I want to help bring it back to its former days of glory. Hats are an important part of our heritage and I feel it's time for them to evolve into a new generation, something beyond the overproduced feathery fascinators of the height street.
What other accessory can transform a complete outfit, distinguish a profession and cover a bad hair day?
Limited production — My work is either an original one-off or is made in small quantities.
Craftsmanship — At present I make everything by hand myself, so you will receive good quality work and I can add personal adaptions to my designs to suit your needs. See the commissions page for more details.
Designs — From the beginning my aim has been to create original work, which is always at the center of everything I design. Constantly designing new work, I have an online store where ready to wear items are available to purchase, and I also design pieces especially to suit personal requirements.
